Happy New Year!
We hope you all had a great holiday season. After spending Christmas in the Philippines, we headed down to Australia. We'll be spending the next 5+ months in the southern hemisphere. After a few days in Melbourne watching some disappointing English cricket with some friends from England, we flew back up to Sydney. We're staying with Karen's godmother Nieva and her sisters Cecille and Susan. Sadly, though, once we leave here in a few days, we won't have home comforts for quite some time.
For New Year's we stayed in the city with Karen's godcousin (is that a word?) Anna and her husband Steve, who graciously hosted us for a few days. The fireworks in Sydney were maybe even better than expected. Sydney usually shows up on the worldwide broadcasts as the first major city to celebrate New Year's and they definitely put on a good show. The family fireworks at 9 pm were as good as many other cities, but that was just the opener. For the midnight show, we walked down to the harbour, standing next to the bridge and across from the Opera House. The 15 minute show was spectacular, so if you're looking for New Year's 2008 plans, you should think about coming Down Under.
We've checked out Sydney for a few days, doing the Opera House tour and visiting the Botanical Gardens. By the way, if bats aren't your thing, don't come to Sydney. There are thousands of huge flying fox bats in the Botanical Gardens. They are actually quite cool, but beware of guano!
Karen has decided to join me on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb that my former work colleagues in London got me as a leaving present. We'll be doing that on Sunday. So we're hoping that the rainy/cloudy weather that we've been having is gone by then so that we get great views of Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
On Monday night we head up to Queensland, in the northeast of Australia and are driving from Cairns to Brisbane in 10 days. Hopefully that's enough time.
We hope everyone's 2007 is off to a good start!

Kevin, don't look down when you're on the bridge! This isn't the same as walking across the "Dope Alley" bridge :-)
